Tangan Lokal Café & Cooking Class sits tucked away on Jl. Sandat in the heart of Ubud and strikes a relaxed balance between casual café and cultural experience. It draws in visitors looking for more than just a quick bite—here, you can savor simple yet thoughtfully prepared local and western dishes, like a fresh bagel or a vibrant fruit plate paired with fresh orange juice, while taking in the peaceful views from the second-floor seating area. The open-air setup lets you catch the shifting light of afternoon into sunset, making it a comfortable spot to linger, whether you’re passing through or settling in for a few meals.

The clientele tends to be a mix of travelers eager to connect with Balinese culture in a personal way and locals who appreciate honest flavors and kind service wrapped in a warm, homey atmosphere. The staff’s friendliness and calm attentiveness give the place an easygoing vibe that complements the quiet neighborhood around it.

What really sets Tangan Lokal apart, though, is its hands-on cooking classes led by Ibu Ayu. These sessions give visitors a rare chance to dive deeper—with small, intimate groups or private lessons, you get to explore traditional Balinese recipes and local stories behind the food. The cooking classes are peppered with moments of laughter, genuine curiosity, and the kind of aromas that stick with you after you leave. For those interested in the cultural rhythms of Bali, it’s an immersive way to engage beyond the plates.

Early to mid-afternoon into sunset is an ideal time to stop by. The light from upstairs windows softens the space, complementing the natural wooden interiors and lush greenery visible around the café. Whether you’re here to relax with a fresh juice or to roll up your sleeves in the kitchen, Tangan Lokal exudes a subtle intimacy that invites connection—to the food, the people, and the slower pace of Ubud life.

Tangan Lokal Café offers a great selection of both local and western dishes at very reasonable prices, with a pleasant view from the second floor. The real highlight, however, was the cooking class with Ibu Ayu. She is knowledgeable, welcoming, and makes the whole experience both fun and educational. Highly recommended for anyone looking not just for a good meal, but also a memorable cultural experience.

The food is incredibly delicious, freshly prepared, and made with great care. The service is outstanding – the staff is friendly, cheerful, and always ready to help. I especially want to highlight the cooking experience with Ari – it was absolutely perfect and so much fun! We made a Balinese cake, and the whole process was a beautiful mix of learning, laughter, and wonderful aromas from the kitchen. I felt completely at home, and the final result was delicious. I warmly recommend this place to anyone looking for amazing food and a lovely, relaxing experience!

Ayu is such a beautiful soul She loves sharing, and you can feel it in every dish she makes. She also tells us about her culture with so much love… I could listen to her for hours! Truly a big heart. And the pastries wow. They’re raw, vegan, gluten free and absolutely delicious. She’s a real magician in the kitchen! On top of that, the prices are very modest for such a breathtaking view. The atmosphere is calm and peaceful just the way I like it. A hidden gem you absolutely cannot miss!

We had a chance to participate in cooking lesson with Ayu. It was an amazing experience! She told us about the Balinese culture and the different ceremonies that are very important to them. Later we cooked together. It's a small, cozy place; we had private lesson. Ayu is very warm and kind. We highly recommend it! :)

Ayu is such a sweetheart! What a lovely woman! From the moment we went to ask her the night before, she gave off such a positive vibe that I instantly trusted her. It wasn't just a cooking class; she introduced us to Balinese culture. We learned about their traditions and rituals, the meaning of many things we'd been seeing all the time, but finally understood. The class was so much fun. She explained the recipes, why she'd chosen them, the ingredients, and we talked about alternatives we could use in our own countries. Then we got cooking! We each made a main course, an appetizer, a dessert, and an herbal infusion. It was all so much fun. We learned about ingredients we'd tried in other places, but now we understood where they came from and how they should be prepared. Everything was delicious! We each ate our three dishes on their beautiful terrace. We ate so much that we practically rolled out of there! Haha Thank you so much, Ayu, for this wonderful experience and for making us feel so welcome

We truly love Ayu’s cooking Her desserts feel like a nourishing protein bar after a long ride, comforting, grounding, and satisfying. Every dish is full of flavor, and you can really feel that it’s made with love. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely friendly. The location is close to Ubud town yet peacefully less crowded, with the added bonus of beautiful sunset light. Highly recommended if you enjoy supporting local businesses

Might be our favorite of all in Bali! Home-cooked, fresh food with top quality (we had many brunches there and local dishes for dinner), always the kindest & warmest welcome and conversations There are seats upstairs and possibility to work/study remotely as well! And of course we also took the cooking class, can only recommend :)
